83 units – built by GMDL, 1,200 horsepower, A1A-A1A trucks, operating weight 238,000 – 240,000 lbs. Tractive effort 30,000 lbs.
Between 1983 and 1990 CN re-trucked 46 GMD1s with Flexicoil trucks from retired GP9s, converting them from A1A-A1A to B-B. At the same time the 1,000 gallon fuel tank was replaced with a 2,000 gallon tank and the truck-mounted sandboxes were replaced. These locomotives were renumbered to the 1100 series.
In 1988 CN remanufactured 15 GMD1 units for continued branchline service, they retained their A1A-A1A trucks. CN referred to these locomotives as GMD1A. The remanufacturing included new power assemblies, upgrading the engine to a 12-cylinder 645C. The cylindrical sparks arrestors on the stacks were eliminated and the air brakes and traction motors were upgraded. These locomotives were renumbered to the 1600 series.
In 1989 CN remanufactured an 24 GMD1s for road service, receiving B-B trucks. Above the frame the work done was similar to the 1600 series. CN referred to these locomotives as GMD1B. These locomotives were renumbered to the 1400 series.
