GMD1 Nos. 1600-1614

15 units – built by GMD, 1,200 horsepower, A1A-A1A trucks. From October to December 1988 these locomotives were remanufactured at Pointe St. Charles shops for continued service on lightweight branch lines. The remanufacturing included new power assemblies upgrading the engine to a 12-cylinder 645C, the cylindrical spark arrestors on the exhaust stacks were eliminated (the engines were equipped with spark-arresting exhaust manifolds, the air brakes were upgraded to a 26L system and the traction motors were upgraded. After the remanufacturing CN classified these locomotives as GMD1A.

Externally anticlimbers, plow pilots and ditch light brackets were added at both ends and all weather cab windows were added.

In the cab the controls were reversed to make the short hood the front, a hot plate, refrigerator and toilet were added.

These units were painted in a revised version of CN’s 1973 livery featuring a red short hood, black cab sides and roof, and grey-outlined gold-coloured road numbers on the cab side. They received cast-bronze Pointe St. Charles builder’s plates denoting the status as remanufactured locomotives.

In 1998 CN had no need for lightweight six-axles GMD1s for branch line service so began converting the 1600 series GMD-s to B-B trucks and renumbered them to the 1430 – 1444 number series.
